English Phrasal Verbs

English Phrasal VerbsA most complex English grammar phenomenon in easy explanations. Let’s make verb tenses handy.

A phrasal (verb) is a verb + particle (adverb/preposition) combination. Sometimes its meaning may be figured out literally.

There’s no getting away from reality.

But most phrasals are non-motivated whose meaning differs from constituent meanings and makes separate concepts.

Please hold on for a sec!

Phrasals are most common in neutral/informal English, especially spoken American. There’s no today’s English without thousands of phrasals making speech lively. They serve as colloquial equivalents of formal Latin verbs.

postpone = put off

exit = get out

Every student of English needs understanding of at least basic phrasals and common nouns, compound adjectives made from them. The more productive a verb, the more phrasals it forms – be, bring, come, get, go, keep, look, put, run, take, turn… Phrasal meaning can often be guessed from corresponding particle meaning. One of top particles is up meaning completed actions. Some phrasals are used only with certain subjects or in certain contexts.

I’m so thrilled by take-offs.

Intransitive Phrasals

They have no objects.

Come on! Hurry up!

Separable Transitive Phrasals

Their objects go before/after particles.

Have you looked through that book? = Have you looked that book through? = Have you looked it through?

Inseparable Transitive Phrasals

Their objects go only after particles.

You stay away from me!

Some verb+particle combinations have several meanings being transitive/intransitive.

Uncle is getting over.

When will we get over the crisis?

MultiPhrasals

Some phrasals have 3 words – verb+adverb+preposition. In 3-word phrasals objects go only after prepositions.

So let’s get down to work.

Prepositional Verbs

Many verbs are followed by prepositions but aren’t phrasal. These verb+preposition combinations have only motivated literal meaning. Prepositional/phrasal verb distinction is unimportant. It’s only practical to understand verb combination meaning.

Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
